A Lebanese boy serving time as a violent offender sues his parents. His reason? "Because I was born." Zain, whose parents don’t even know his date of birth, has many younger siblings. When his sister Sahar is sold to their landlord upon getting her first period, Zain runs away from home and meets Rahil, an illegal immigrant from Ethiopia with a one-year-old son named Yonas. When Rahil fails to come home one day, Zain takes care of Yonas. Zain doesn’t have a birth certificate; Rahil, a residence permit. Actor and director Nadine Labaki saw Zain Al Rafeea, a Syrian refugee, in the streets of Beirut and cast him for the role of Zain. She herself appears in the film as Zain’s lawyer to advocate for those who are unable to officially prove their existence, both in and outside the film.
