A woman with a sword rides on a horse through the sandy desert. In her hand is the head of a man she beheaded. Director Mouly Surya twists the most masculine genre and sets it against the backdrop of the beautiful landscape of Sumba Island, Indonesia, to complete the western narrative about a powerful and indestructible woman. As a woman living alone, Marlina faces threats of sexual assault, and while the police and the authorities do nothing about violence against women, she sets out for revenge, like a lonely cowboy. On a desert road, she meets a pregnant woman, a woman going to her relative’s wedding, and a girl. As these women help Marlina, this revenge narrative becomes a dynamic story about women’s solidarity. An Asian and feminist reinterpretation of the western genre, this film features a twist and cinematography that beautifully captures the desert landscape. (HONG Soin)
