Program Note
This film follows a family′s struggles to survive in a new land based on the real life director′s grandmother. In the 1940s, she leaves China to settle in Taiwan. Three days before their family′s escape, the grandmother hides in a closet, claiming she can′t leave behind her beloved persimmon tree. Wang′s childhood memories becomes scenes as the audience glimpses at a grandmother tying ten children together with rope to prevent their going astray. From the absurd to the tragic, this film focuses on how a strong grandmother relates to her ten grandsons in an entirely new world.

Born in 1942 in Anhui Province, China, he studied fine arts at the National Academy of Art in Taiwan. Subsequent to his directorial feature <If i were for Real>, he made <Strawman> (1987), winner of Best Director from the Golden Horse Film Festival and <Hills of No Return> (1992), winner of several accolades from various festivals.
