Program Note
Driven by poverty, many Filipinos seek employment abroad. Some return with savings, but others end up worse. Encountering various abuse, from rape to mental torture, employers often put animals before workers. Flor Contemplacion went to Singapore to work as a maid. Her long absence entirely disrupted and reshaped her family′s life. In late 1989,she was
sentenced to die by the Singapore government for the murder of a domestic worker and a Singapore boy. Believing her innocence, Filipinos rallied to show their support and demanded labor protection abroad from the Filipino government.
