A Lan, a sensitive young writer, strolls in a Beijing public park often frequented by gays and lesbians. During a police raid，A Lan is taken to headquarters where a “by the book” interrogation ensues, triggering an unexpected reminiscence of his tumultuous life. He recalls his childhood, parents, school, first sexual experience, politically-mandated peasant work in the country, and then, his slow drift into the quest for true love.
