Program Note
A Lan, a sensitive young writer, strolls in a Beijing public park often frequented by gays and lesbians. During a police raid,A Lan is taken to headquarters where a “by the book” interrogation ensues, triggering an unexpected reminiscence of his tumultuous life. He recalls his childhood, parents, school, first sexual experience, politically-mandated peasant work in the country, and then, his slow drift into the quest for true love. These brief, intimate glances into A Lan’s life begin to blur the officer’s feelings for his prisoner. A strange love story unfolds.
