Program Note
Youri, 16 years old, grew up in Gagarine, the huge red brick city of Ivry-sur-Seine, where he dreams of becoming a cosmonaut. When the city is threatened with demolition, everyone leaves, but Youri remains. Gagarine city is more than a set, it is a place steeped in history. Built by the French Communist Party as a housing project in 1963, it was named after Soviet cosmonaut Youri Gagarin, and demolished in 2019. The two filmmakers filmed on location at the buildings of the Gagarin city before their destruction in 2019. With a look of great poetry, the two filmmakers transform this abandoned city into an immense spaceship where Youri floats in weightlessness like a cosmonaut. The dreamy teenager continues to embody the dreams of solidarity of the 60s. Gagarine is a unique film that exists at the crossroads of a social film, a documentary and science fiction.
