Program Note
What comes after an Olympic dream is realized? Nadia, a swimmer in her early twenties – apparently too young to call it quits – just won a medal at the biggest event of her life. She decides to retire from elite sports to escape the endless hours of battling the water. But is she ready to spread her wings? Nadia, Butterfly is an intimate coming-of-age drama, but it does not provide any clear convictions or immediate answers to the protagonist’s quest. The camera unhurriedly captures Nadia as she gets intoxicated, sings karaoke, has a one-night stand with a stranger, and fumbles through the streets aimlessly. Every shot is a persistent character study of her inner turbulence, a young woman stuck in limbo struggling with uncertainty. (Karen PARK)
