Upon killing one bird of a pair, Hae-Jin discovers the duality of life and death that dominates this world. He realizes the original pain and suffering of life: death and vanity, attachment and desire, sins and fear. He learns that our existence is to experience life and death, good and evil, and joy and distress. Thus, life itself is emptiness and there is neither birth nor death.
