Program Note

Casablanca has become an underworld. Rocker Larsen, who can no longer sing, falls in love with Raja, a sex worker. She hopes to escape from her pimp. They dream of getting out of Casablanca by sharing their trauma and singing together. El Iraki’s feature debut is a melodrama with a rock and roll rhythm. Crossing Casablanca, it shows the rookie’s ambition to capture all the joy that realism and genre movies can give. It creates an unpredictable tension and shows images of Moroccan rock, spaghetti westerns, and a grazing viper in the 1970s. The blinding images reveal Morocco’s social trauma. (CHOI Yeon Woo)

Director

Ismaël EL IRAKI

Ismaël El Iraki studied directing at La Fémis in France, and currently lives between Casablanca and Paris. With a passion for music, he founded a concert recording company in Paris and exhibited a music and video installation for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014. He made his directorial debut with the short film Carcasse (2007). Harash (2008) won him the FNAC award in National Competition and Special Mention from the Jury at the 2009 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. Zanka Contact is his debut feature film, which was presented at the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival and won Best Actress.
