Danielle Arbid adapts Annie Ernaux’ famous novel and tells the story of the burning passion of Hélène, a divorced mother, for Alexander, a Russian businessman. Carried by the great French actress Laetitia Dosch, Passion Simple makes us share this love that turns into an obsession and takes the heroine all the way to Moscow. Danielle Arbid shows the sexual relations between these two characters, but her goal is also to make us feel how this physical passion becomes mental. When she is separated from her lover, the heroine becomes a drug addict, unable to live her personal life. Laetita Dosch′s talent brings lightness and a tone of comedy to this situation. The film is also very visual, giving Hélène’s passion the appearance of a dreamlike journey. A novel written and adapted by a woman, Passion Simple offers an incisive look at feminine desire. Danielle ARBID

Born in Beirut, Danielle Arbid left Lebanon and moved to Paris at age 18. After studying comparative literature at Sorbonne, she worked at a newspaper for six years. Her first short film Raddem (1998) received awards from more than 10 international film festivals. Her documentaries Alone with War (2001) and Conversation de salon (2004) won the Silver Leopard and Golden Leopard, respectively, at the Locarno International Film Festival. Her first feature In the Battlefields (2004) and second feature A Lost Man (2007) were both presented in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival. Simple Passion (2020), a film adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same title, was presented at the Cannes Film Festival, joining the ranks of well-established filmmakers.
