Program Note
The Farm tells a complex story of life and death behind the bars of Louisiana State Penitentiary, the largest maximum-security prison in the U.S. We see a spectrum of emotions and issues facing six male inmates as we get a compelling look at the human faces and tragic stories that inhabit this infamous place. The Angola, still lovingly referred to as the ′farm′, was a thriving slave plantation in the 18th and 19th centuries. After the turn of this century, Angola was converted into a prison, yet not much was changed - free labor which was provided by an entirely black slave population was then taken over by a mostly black convict population.
