Program Note
Shabaneh is suffering from fear and compulsion to tell her fiancé about the fact that she was gangraped as a child, when she was wandering around Afghanistan and Pakistan. Negar’s future mother-in-law demands a proof of her virginity upon learning that she lived by herself in Tehran for seven years, and Negar feels bitter about her fiancé who neither believes her nor protects her. Fereshteh visits a gynecologist despite her fiancé’s objection and finds herself forced into a corner. A few days before her wedding, Niloufar has to tell her father that she cannot get married, while Afghan refugee Nahid has to put an end to her sham marriage in order to marry her fiancé. Seven and a Half consists of seven stories of seven women, whose lives will change on the coming Friday either by marriage or divorce, and a half a story about what happens afterward. The director of this film, Navid MAHMOUDI, who was born in Afghanistan and raised in Iran, dedicates this film to the spirit of his mother, Rona. (CHOI Eun)
