Program Note
Brushing is a portrayal of the alienation stemming from the conformity demanded of individuals within the confines of family life. A boy and his grandfather are left alone together while his parents go away on vacation. The unpleasantness in the house is palpable, and viewers are encouraged to detach themselves from the characters. When we enter the boy′s mind, where he imagines himself masturbating and killing his grandfather, we see that the process of a deep-seated desire to violate taboos is at work. (Kim Sung-Wook)
