Program Note
Andrei Schwartz found the occasion for this film in his early youth, when he was still living in Bucharest, close to a Roma settlement that was located at the edge of a garbage dump. Nothing has changed for the better for the Roma. They are still living outside the city borders, on wastelands and dumps. They try to eke out a living by digging up all sorts of things from the garbage. Most Rumanians scapegoat the "gypsies" for the country′s economic and social misery since the state of dictatorship. Despite discrimination and poverty, the Roma manage to survive with an astonishing zest for life.
