A night on a Parisian bridge. A young woman, eyes filled with tears, climbs over a fence to jump into the Seine river. From behind, she suddenly hears someone say. "It looks as if you wished to do something improper."This is how the story of Adele begins, a woman unlucky in life with no place to go. The voice is Gabor′s, a man much older than her who earns a living as a knife thrower. Adele accepts his offer of a job as his assistant and together they head to the south of France and Monaco, where Gabor finds work for a time in a circus. An ambivalent relationship develops between them, influenced by those they meet. Their journey leads them across the continent to Greece where they part ways only to meet again on the same bridge in Paris.
