Program Note
Woo-In is an employee for a down-block office in Seoul. His everyday life is filled with repetitive and meaningless tasks. But things are about to change when two women enter Woo-In′s life. Woo-In finds the girl of his dreams, Asako, at an Internet porno site. He also meets Mia, an assistant teacher for a bakery class, at his office. Aya from Tokyo has no hope for the future and no affection for her family. Collecting pretty shoes and practicing suicide are the only sources of comfort for her. Aya, who is known as Asako in the cyber world, and Woo-In, who falls in love with her, meet by chance in Alaska. Asako in Ruby Shoes is about the ′modern′ dreams and sentiments of those who wander around a ′post modern′ dimension. The Internet, pornography, the clash between a wish to escape and the quiet mundane of the everyday, a portrait of two young people living in two different spaces (Korea and Japan)...Through these elements, this wistful melodrama ironically twists our myths about romantic love.
