Program Note
Spira, released from the juvenile detention center after eight years, returns to Reboleira, the outer region of Lisbon, where the demolition is underway. The joy of meeting his family and friends again doesn’t last long. A local trafficker Kikas welcomes him with violence instead of friendly greetings. With a calm and affectionate view, Director Basil DA CUNHA looks at the portraits of the wounded youth and the city sacrificed by modernization. The white horse that appears and disappears like a dream is a gift for his girlfriend, representing the boy’s aged inner side, which shines brightly in contrast to the city of the night. It makes the film sadder. The faces of the residents and street scenes of the residents glanced panoramically at the second half of the movie are by far the most dominant. As the director’s first feature, it was invited to the competition section at the Locarno Film Festival. (SEO Seunghee)
