Program Note
Seventeen years after Y Tu Mamá También (2002), Alfonso CUARON returns to Mexico. From the moment the project Roma was unveiled, the world has paid attention to his new film. The film, produced by Netflix, has since become a hot topic of conversation due to the conflict between the Cannes Film Festival and Netflix for submitting it in competition. Subsequently, when it was invited to compete at the Venice Film Festival this year, expectations of the film reached stratospheric heights. Roma, in which CUARON participated in all areas as a director, scriptwriter, cinematographer, and editor, tells the story of middle-class families and housewives in 1970s Mexico City, based on his own experiences. Soon after the premiere, it was praised for its classic black-and-white aesthetic and sophisticated sound design that showed the ultimate elegance expected of cinema, which led to the unanimous Golden Lion Award judgment.
