Brothers Charlie and Eli Sisters set off for the west, San Francisco with Det. John Morris, the three partnering to catch a wanted man, Hermann Warm. Unlike the rash, violent, troublemaker Charlie, the older Eli, tired of working as a bounty hunter, is yearning to settle down after this job. However, John colludes with Hermann to dig up gold using Hermann’s formula to find gold, which the Sisters brothers agree to. The Sisters Brothers describes the activities and returning home of Charlie and Eli Sisters in the Gold Rush era. Filmmaker Jacques Audiard, who returns after a three-year hiatus following his Palme d’Or-winning Dheepan, partners again with long-time collaborator Thomas Bidegain on this adaptation of Patrick Dewitt’s novel. While it is an English-language Western, the film definitely shows off Audiard’s visual aesthetics. Joaquin Phoenix gives an outstanding performance accompanied by John C. Reilly and Jake Gyllenhaal, who draw one into the screen. Winner of the Silver lion (Best Director) at the Venice Film Festival in 2018. (Erica Nam)
