Program Note
Sinan, who majored in literature in college, gets a job as a teacher and returns home to help the family. But what he really wants is to publish his first novel. Although he tries to raise money for publishing, his family is always struggling with debt due to his father Idris′ gambling. To him, his father is an object of both love and hatred. Running more than three hours, The Wild Pear Tree observes the masculinity of crisis by placing Sinan and Idris in the center of the story, talking about Sinan and the people around him and the endless dialogue they share. The long-winded conversations create unique emotional rhythms, and in them, Sinan appears sometimes pathetic and obnoxious. The tensions between Sinan, who believes in the potency of his own language, and Idris, who silently digs a well that doesn’t produce water move toward the end of the movie, the heavy and intense magic moment. The scenery around Çanakkale in northwestern Turkey is another character that adds another voice to the story. (Jin Park)
