Program Note
Toby, a cynical advertising director, finds himself trapped in the outrageous delusions of an old Spanish shoemaker who believes himself to be Don Quixote. During the course of their comic and increasingly surreal adventures, Toby is forced to confront the tragic repercussions of a film he made in his idealistic youth — a film that changed the hopes and dreams of a small Spanish village forever. A series of accidents leads to a fire that threatens to destroy the village and Toby comes face-to-face with demons, both real and imagined, modern and medieval. Damsels are rescued, jousts are fought, giants are slain and women have beards. Reality and fantasy blur on this bizarre road trip, which leads to a phantasmagorical finale. Loosely based on the novel Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is Terry Gilliam’s twenty-nine-years in the making project, widely recognized as one of the most challenging productions in history.
