Program Note
In 1914, Italy is on the brink World War I. Lucia, a young shepherdess living a bucolic life with her family on the beautiful island of Capri, encounters a naked group of outsiders enjoying nature. They are young artists from all over Europe who have chosen Capri as their commune to achieve their artistic ideals. Initially frightened by their unfamiliar appearance, Lucia gradually befriends them and opens her eyes to their way of life and especially to the idea of subject. Mario Martone, who explored the human spirit amid Italy’s turbulent modern times through the story of the 19th Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi in Ill giovane favoloso (2014), captures the early 20th century Italy undergoing a stormy socio-political period in Capri Revolution through the microcosm of Capri. Lucia, commune leader Seybu, and the young island doctor Carlo are the different faces of the young generation of the time. The image of the modern subject as main agent, represented by Lucia, is in line with the historical interest that Martone has pursued in his earlier works. (Jin Park)
