Program Note
Although much attention, as well as concern, is raised when a living politician’s life is adapted to the screen, it looks as though it is definitely something that Paolo Sorrentino enjoys. Picking up from his previous Il divo (2008), which dealt with the controversial politician Giulio Andreotti, his latest work, Loro, presents a daring piece on one of the most controversial figures in Italian political history: ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The film is structured between Berlusconi and people around him on one side, and a young businessman, Morra, who dreams of success through his endeavors to get close to power on the other. Like Il divo, Sorrentino doesn’t judge Berlusconi in any didactic manner or try to understand him from a specific historical perspective. Instead he places long-time partner Toni Servillo’s face and image at the center of an arena of politics, sex, corruption and dishonesty to lead the audience into facing a reality that is more dramatic than film in a ‘cinematic’ way.
