Program Note
Írisz Leiter goes to Budapest′s most famous hat store, ‘Leiter’ to work there. Her father used to run it, but a new owner has taken it over. One day, while busy working for important guests, a strange man approaches Írisz and asks about her brother. Írisz scouts Budapest for traces of her estranged brother, but in the process, everybody she meets warns her to leave the city. Sunset unfolds in mysterious structures recalling the meandering and heavy camerawork of the director’s previous film, Son of Saul (2015). Without giving a chance to look away, the unique directing following the main character in the back leads the audience into the beautiful streets of Budapest. It is also a pleasure to enjoy the splendid and beautiful costumes. Hungarian director Nemes László made a strong debut with his first film Son of Saul, winning the Cannes Grand Prix and Academy Award for Best Foreign Language. His second feature had its premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival. (Erica Nam)
