Esther and Juan operate a bull ranch on the plains of Mexico. To Juan, a world-renowned poet, the ranch seems perfect. He rides a horse like a cowboy and gathers up his herd of bulls. Esther has to manage the ranch and take care of the three children by herself. Although they seem a happy couple, Juan, who has been espousing an open marriage, begins to feel uneasy as Esther has a relationship with Phil, a packhorse driver. Tension develops between the two as Juan has doubts about Esther and his sense of shame grows. In line with Post Tenebras Lux which won the Best Director Award at the Cannes in 2012, Carlos Reygadas’s new film, Our Time, explores desire and fear of masculine subject in a rural Mexican landscape. The crisis of masculinity presented through Juan coincides strangely with the image of a testosterone-charged bull on the vast expanse of land. DP Diego Garcia, acclaimed for Neon Bull (2015), provides outstanding camerawork, and Reygadas and his real life wife Natalia Lopez play the two main characters. (Jin Park)
