Program Note
A rave party is getting underway in a remote area. After rehearsals for the show, the dancers kick off the dance party with plenty of alcohol and expert talent. As the party heats up, one of the dancers discovers the booze is spiked with a powerful drug. The dancer warns everyone to remain alert, but many are already in a state of hallucination. As more people lose control and become violent, the party descends into complete chaos. The movie consists of three parts: interviews with dancers, their rehearsal scenes, and unhinged drug-induced madness. Director Gaspar Noe continues his profile with stimulating materials and his powerful directing style in Climax. The dark reddish color of the movie leaves a strong and distinct impression of the space different from reality, and the camera creates long take scenes in a fixed gaze. While some audiences may be disturbed, the first scene showing a powerful lead towards film with a simple story-telling and a white space separated from the chaos of interior space is enough to show why the world is paying attention to Noe’s films.
