In the summer of 2021, Felix, a member of the European Parliament, sets up a research group including Greek finance officials for the exploration of the Aegean Sea. Their purpose is to find the new areas for future development. They first arrive in an islet named Armenaki. With independent discipline and morality, this society is a so-called moneyless land where everything is free of charge for the people aged 65 and over and sick go to hospitals for free. Felix and his group slowly assimilate into the strange but peaceful life of the Armenaki people. Veteran Greek director Giorgos Panousopoulos’s new film, In This Land No One Knew How to Cry, is a satirical comedy film that alludes to the realities of Greek society struggling through a long economic crisis. Armenaki life, embodied in the phrase “Who counts money these days?” challenges modern life, which is decimated by money and capitalism. Even though it is an imaginary world, Armenaki is like the most peaceful paradise we can dream of, free from greed, poverty, and exploitation. (Jin Park)
