In 2003, Lula was elected president of Brazil. Laura and her two sons′ families gather to have a New Year′s party at their home in Rio Grande do Sul, the southern part of Brazil. With three generations all in one house, things quickly get messy. The parents accidentally inhale the cocaine they found, the sons watch pornographic videos secretly, and the daughters are entangled in love stories. In an old house where maintenance is needed, family members get noisy in their idiosyncratic ways. Domingo, co-directed by Fellipe Barbosa and Clara Reinhardt who teamed up after Gabriel And the Mountain (2017), captures and loosely assembles slices of Brazil′s middle-class on a holiday like pieces of a puzzle. The scenes which take place here and there inside the old house, are as distracting as the characters, and the film does not necessarily bring the fragments together into a single story. In this style, it shows the commotions of the family more interesting, mirroring the faces of Brazilian society. (Jin Park)
