Program Note
On an isolated spaceship, everything is artificial and controlled of human desires. A doctor’s past wounds force her to obsess over children, successfully artificially inseminating passengers who are prisoners abandoned on earth. The sole survivor, Monte gets through the day caring for his young daughter, hoping to be saved. The mission to make a contribution to humanity by finding the Black Hole’s rotational energy has failed. Monte and his daughter, now a young girl, can no longer wait forrescue. They embark on a journey into the Black Hole. The film begins with a sketch of life force, which are the only ‘hope’ that might be a metaphor for human life, they can hang on to. The cross-cutting between the spaceship’s claustrophobic space and earth, where nature and freedom exist to present a rupture, disjunction, human dignity and the essence of life. Master director Claire Denis’ first English language film effectively expresses a dark and deep abyss through the stoic face of Robert Pattinson, while Juliette Binoche’s superb take on self-destruction through perverted desires once again proves her to be one of the most outstanding actresses of our time.
