Program Note
The riveting story of NASA’s mission to land the first man on the moon, focusing on legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong in the years 1961 to 1969, leading up to the Apollo 11 mission. It’s an origin story for a real-life superhero that started out as an ordinary person, one of many at NASA, achieving great success with the moon landing but experiencing lots of failures before it. A visceral, first person account based on the best-selling book by James R. Hansen, the movie explores the sacrifices and the costs—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in the history of space travel. Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Damien Chazelle’s fourth feature film, First Man is an American biographical drama about a man who has the strong will to pursue his dreams no matter what happens. First Man premiered at this year’s Venice International Film Festival and will be released in the U.S. on October 12th.
