Program Note
Caricaturing the war and division in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine, Donbass addresses the country’s current status with disconnected places and episodes. In various spaces, such as streets, conference halls, gynecologists’ clinics, checkpoints, buses, and offices, people do totally unexpected things. Based on custom, prejudice, stereotype, and a twist at the same time, this film pays attention to the irrational behavior of its characters as if it were watching a drama. It continues to raise suspicion about the locations where the action takes place because all the spaces in the movie are like the stage of a theater. The movie, which has been playing the role of individual character without any narrative to weave through the entire movie, increasingly faces a distorted and corrupted society. In a society where rules, human rights, and trust are broken, division continues. The final scene creates another layer of activity for the disturbances. It is a remarkable moment of pain that brings about a new reading of various situations between the beginning and the end. (Lee Seungmin)
