A crime drama about Argentina’s longest incarcerated prisoner. In the early 1970s, young Carlos is sentenced to 46 years in prison for dozens of murders and robberies. He made headlines not only for the fact that he held no remorse, but also because of his baby face, with large eyes and golden curls. Many films about psycho-killers detail family background, sexual orientation, and physical defects as motives. To avoid this, director Ortega uses a voiceover by Carlos but doesn’t delve into his mind. Instead, he focuses on creating an attractive surfaces, like Carlos himself, whose character does as he pleases and likes to show off. The elaborate symmetry, the bold patterns and contrasting colors of the wallpaper at the scene of the crime, the beautiful face unaffected by his cold-blooded crimes, the peaceful camera, the cheerful and powerful soundtrack all captivate our eyes and ears. Without any pretense at depth, the film negates or obscures motive for the crimes, making us think about the relationship between surface and depth, and the ins and outs of man and film.
