Program Note
This is the latest film by Jia Zhangke, the director most representative of Chinese art cinema. In 2001, in Datong, Shanxi, China, local beauty Qiao Qiao and Bin, a young tough, are in love. One day, when Bin is attacked on the street by other gang members, Qiao fires a pistol she illegally purchased to save him and spends five years in jail. When released from prison in 2006, she visits Bin, but he is already dating another woman. Time passes and one day in 2018, Qiao, after overcoming a broken heart and starting a new life in her hometown of Datong, receives a call from Bin. The director, who has been paying attention to China′s social reality and alienation issues since his debut, explores the tragic 17-year-old love between a man and a woman who have been drifting in a fast-changing Chinese society.
