Based on Oshii Mamoru’s animated film of the same name, Illang is a live action film adapted for Korea. In 2024, an anti-reunification terrorist group emerges when Korea becomes impoverished because of pressures from world powers regarding the unification of South and North Korea. A special police unit is launched to keep peace and order, but the Public Security Department is weary of splitting power, and keeps the unit in check while working to dismantle it. Meanwhile, a member of the special police unit, Lim Joong-kyung (Kang Dong-won), continues to meet the mysterious Lee Yoon-hee (Han Hyo-joo). Whereas the original version focused on the confusion of identity between human and vicious wolf, director Kim Jee-woon attempts to create a melodrama with added Korean political elements. As witnessed in his previous films, a splendid visual telling takes the place of an abbreviated narrative. The film is full of dreamlike images and visual pleasures. Some scenes boast overwhelming visuals to be remembered, adding to the emotional impact. (Song Kyong Won)
