Wahyu Juno, who was abandoned in a village in Central Java, joins a Lengger dance troupe of traditional Indonesian male cross-dressers performing as female dancers. Growing up between the troupe and his relatives, Juno relates how his body could be both masculine and feminine, and became an object of attraction and repulsion. The body performing the traditional dance which emphasizes the femininity of a male body becomes the site of contestation between tradition and incantation, prejudice against gender roles and politics. In chronological order, the film tells the true story of Indonesian choreographer and dancer Rianto. This dramatic story told through protagonist Juno is cross-cut with Rianto’s interviews discussing his body, dancing and life philosophy. As Rianto’s long history with discrimination as a figure who embodied gender flexibility, Juno’s life also faces the same conditions, but like his body which both serves as an object of active voyeurism and display, traces of passion and trauma are both deeply engraved on him as well.
