Program Note
In this satire about the Holocaust in Romania, an actress tells the camera that she will play the role of performance director Mariana Marine, and the movie follows her routine. Preparing for a performance by day and enjoying her privacy at night, Mariana is only thinking about her performance: She is struggling to recreate Romanian history as a holocaust assailant. The process of preparing for the performance is itself the process of revealing the history of Romania, currently hidden in Romania. The history of the assailant who tries to conceal the past, and the conflict and cracks in the performance that must create a spectacle in the public space, reveal what the movie is about. The title of this film is quite ′meta′, of crossing the boundaries of a movie within a movie and a play within a play. Quoting Hannah Arendt, Benjamin and Marx, it raises a variety of questions. This film is also simultaneously intellectual and willing to make a fool of the audience at the same time. (Lee Seungmin)
