Program Note
A film about the closure of a large factory and labor struggles. The film begins with negotiations between labor and management. After the company declared a fiscal crisis two years earlier, the laborers voluntarily made sacrifices because they trusted the company’s promise to protect them. However, the company now informs the press and the factory that it will be closing shop. The film follows Laurent Amédéo as he leads the union struggle for 1,100 employees. The camera circles Laurent as though it is inside the negotiating room. Knowing it could mean their survival, the laborers fiercely negotiate, hold meetings, request interviews, and repeat the process over and over again. Hope and despair intersect, faith and betrayal are shared, and the greater community slowly disintegrates because of personal situations. Rather than follow in the standard dichotomous relationship between corporation against laborer, the film infiltrates the labor camp and questions the union. It is an observer in the union struggle and relays the frustration of the situation with the movements of the camera and the obscured images in the corner. (Lee Seungmin)
