The Trouble With You follows the conventional screwball comedy genre structure of conflict and reconciliation, where the main characters engage in a farcical commotion. Santi is hailed as a hero when he dies during an investigation. Each night, his widow Yvonne tells their son Théo tales of his father while gradually recovering from her loss through a relationship with her late husband’s colleague, Louis. But when Santi is revealed as a dirty cop, Yvonne cannot help but linger in the presence of Antoine, who unjustly spent time in prison because of Santi. The unpredictable Antoine mistakes Yvonne’s attempts at atonement for Santi and kindness for love, and the situation only worsens. Entertaining values are added in scenes such as Yvonne’s emotional state setting the tone for each repeated version of Santi’s heroic tales versus his actions as a corrupted cop. This is a superb piece with outstanding performances from Adèle Haenel and Pio Marmaï who worked with the Dardennes, and a cameo from Audrey Tautou of Amélie.
