Program Note
Writer Jacques and free-spirited young man Arthur gravitate to each other at first sight. Jacques, in Paris, and Arthur, in Brittany, keep a long distance relationship, which Arthur embraces with innocence and straightforwardness, while it is more complicated for Jacques. The death of an ex-lover leaves Jacques with great sadness and physically ill. Arthur, in order to be by Jacques′ side and also pursue a career as a film director decides to move to Paris. Set in early 1990s Paris when the fear of AIDS and a mood of frustration were rampant, and French society and politics were still conservative to have any expectation for hope or optimism, the film successfully captures the era with a blue tone running throughout the film, which evokes faint and faded sensibilities of memories. Pierre Deladonchamps, who plays Jacques, and newcomer Vincent Lacoste share a fine chemistry that adds beauty and elegance to the film. This is the latest work from Christophe Honoré, who returns with his first film since 2014’s Metamorphoses. (Erica Nam)
