Program Note
How do children survive in a lawless world filled with murder, robbery, drugs and kidnapping? Buy Me a Gun is a post-Apocalyptic film about those living in fear of the Mexican drug cartel. The hand-held camera following the young semi-professional actors amid ruthless violence remains an observer in the seemingly neo-realistic shots. But at the same time, the film borrows from the fantasy and perspective created by the children in "Huckleberry Finn" or "Peter Pan". The main character, Huck, lives alone with her father in a caravan. Since the cartel is always kidnapping girls, she dresses up as a boy and wears a mask. Her father wants to protect her, but it becomes more and more difficult. Her only friends are three boys who use tree leaves to hide themselves and steal food from the cartel. Who is the hero that will end this endless horror? When all adults are gone and Huck is left alone with the villain, she gets her revenge. (Cho HyeYoung)
