Program Note
Jacek dreams of a happy future after proposing to his beloved. Unfortunately, a workplace accident leaves him with a disfigured face. As a result, his life and future are lost, and even his beloved abandons him. He bears the attentions and stares of others as he steps out to the world to win back his beloved and his life, only to be faced with a cold world. The film depicts Jacek’s struggle against prejudices and his quest for life and love. Poland’s leading female filmmaker Malgorzata Szumowska brings two perspectives to the screen in a kaleidoscope of images and music that leads one into a fantastic realm, while using the metaphor of the distorted direction gaze from a Jesus statue to highlight the discrimination against others that are different and religious hypocrisy. Like her previous film Body, the filmmaker once again presents a delicate exploration of human psychology reflected through the body, and won the Jury Grand Prix at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival for it.
