Program Note
A black comedy about the afflictions of a timid man in a dangerous relationship of subjugation with a violent man. Marcello, a dog groomer in a small town, believes he and neighborhood thug Simone are friends, though he is in fact only using Marcello for his own gains. The ruthless and violent Simone inspires fear in everyone, including Marcello. When the townspeople finally confront Simone, Marcello takes Simone’s side and goes to prison in his place. Marcello is far from typical masculinity. He is small, fragile, and cares for pets for a living. The contrast between the scene where he grooms dogs even bigger than him and the scene where he drags Simone and locks him up for revenge makes a funny but sad comedy. Still, he isn’t an innocent victim. To make money, he procures drugs, grovels before violence, and seeks side income. The film casts a unique charm with its penetrating interpretation of a man obedient to violence, the rough gray and earth tone colors, the mise-en-scene of a desolate neighborhood, and a composition that creates visual absurdities.
