Program Note
Priest Giorgi, a former film director, is sent to serve the small parish in the mountain village. To bring villagers closer to church he starts showing films there. After the screening of the first picture, Billy Wilder’s Some Like it Hot , the audience imply that the local music teacher Lili looks exactly like Marilyn Monroe. After meeting Lili, Father Giorgi’s balance between cleric and secular world starts to quiver by the woman who is extremely sexy and the temptation is difficult to resist. The Confession is a new feature film by Georgian master Zaza Urushadze, whose previous film Tangerines went to the nomination for The Best Foreign Language Film at Academy Award in 2015. Starting with comedic development of a small peaceful community, the film however reveals the secret of the people under the surface of rural peace and intense dynamics of mind filled with jealousy, desire and distrust through a sharp microscopic examination.
