Program Note
Sentenced to death for murdering her husband, Soraya writes a long letter to her country’s president requesting a special pardon. This letter, which is as long as a novel, is repeatedly lost and found before it finally, reaches the president and first lady. Through cross-cutting, the film shows the presidential couple reading the letter and Soraya’s voice-over, telling them about herself. The story told from her perspective graphically describes the reality of Afghan women who are desperate to lead their own lives. Using a “frame within a frame” and a mirror image, this melodrama visualizes what traps Soraya. Her blurry images are framed behind a window, an opaque curtain and windblown dust. A symbolic moment comes when she accidentally kills her husband with the window glass. Nevertheless, that symbolic incident doesn’t lead to her emancipation, but to death, asking us a question with an open ending. (HONG Soin)
