Toni is a Lebanese Christian who lives in Beirut, and Yasser is a Palestinian refugee. While Yasser is doing repairs on a building, a minor disagreement with Toni, a resident, escalates into a clash and the two face it off in a court of law. The court debate is broadcast by the media, fanning the flames of conflict between the Lebanese Christian Democratic Party and the Palestinian refugees. Lebanon is a Muslim country with a considerable Christian population. The Christian community in Lebanon is oppressed by the Islamic system and they express their anger as hatred toward the Palestinian refugees who are an easy target. Director Ziad Doueiri starts the film with a minor quarrel, and develops the storyline into a collision and conflict between the two different Arab worlds. With dynamic and dramatic composition, the director shows how a heated social crisis can escalate out of a minor quarrel. It is a very political movie that depicts the complex conflicts Lebanon is facing, but it also captures the two private worlds of the two men who live with their own traumas unsolved. (HONG Soin)
