Program Note
At this Japanese restaurant in the U.S., what is the recipe for an exquisite dish? Combine a grumbling Mexican chef; and American couple enchanted by exotic flavors; and a Korean couple who are refused service. A Japanese tourist reveals that the restaurant is actually Korean. The Korean owner proudly claims that he has learned how to survive in America. But the secret ingredient in Bitter Sushi is racial self-hatred and the loss of one′s identity in exchange for a piece of the American dream. (Kwon Yong-Min)
