Program Note
Claude Lelouch’s classic 1966 romance is as engaging and moving today as it was upon release. When a widow and a widower meet one Sunday evening at their children’s boarding school, it is the beginning of a cautious relationship influenced by the ghosts of the past. Finding common ground, they become friends, then close friends, but hit a wall when the woman admits the memory of her husband is still too vivid to go further. Often playing out without dialogue and lushly photographed, A Man and a Woman is a rich and poetic exploration of grief and acceptance.
