Delhi, India. 2008. A girl, Aarushi Talwar, is found murdered in her bedroom. Her parents, who were in the next room when it happened, claim that they didn’t hear anything. The police names the servant, Noida, as a suspect but he is also found murdered. This case, which is commonly known as the “Noida double murder case,” came to an apparent end when the girl’s parents were tried and convicted for the crime. Nevertheless, there are still those who believe that they didn’t do it, citing how the police investigation was not only grossly mismanaged but failed to adhere to basic investigative standards. On the assumption that the girl’s parents are innocent, Guilty returns to the murder scene, alternating between examining the evidence supplied by the police and the refutations to them—all in search for the truth. Irrfan Khan, who has enjoyed success in both India and Hollywood, is superb in his role as the film’s detective-protagonist, and Meghna Gulzar, the daughter of India’s most well-known poet and lyricist-cum-filmmaker, wields the camera with skillful force.
