Program Note
In 1971, Delphin, who scrapes out a harsh living on a farm, leaves for Paris to escape country life, be independent and make some money. In Paris, she meets Carol, who is involved in the emerging feminist movement. The encounter changes the two women’s lives completely. Set when the feminist movement reached its peak after The May Revolution, Summertime follows the two women’s ideological struggles and love story. Feminist protests intertwine with the love between the women—the more intimate part of the film—while Catherine Corsini uses nudity and homosexuality as a logical choice for weapons of 1970s feminism. She also shows contradicting situations when it comes to real life. Today’s attitudes towards women and homosexuality are the result of that feminist movement. As Cécile De France perfectly embodies the free and passionate feminist Carol, she has become the standout French actor this year. Summertime has been screened at the Piazza Grande at the Locarno International Film Festival this year and is the latest from mature French director Corsini, whose Replay and Ambitious are well known to Korean viewers.
