Program Note
In Tunis, 2010, several months before the Arab Spring, 18-year-old Farah, fresh from school, sings along with a band, despite her mother Hayet’s dissuasion. Hayet wants her to become a doctor, while Farah seeks freedom, independence, and love, so their conflict increases. Hayet, knowing how oppressive Tunisia’s government authority is, cautions Farah, who is active in political campaigns and embraces her sexuality, but she doesn’t heed and keeps company with the band. Mother and daughter turn their backs on each other. The title is taken from a song Farah sings. Songs and music traditionally have symbolic characteristics of resistance to political oppression, and function as such through the words. In the film too, the songs the band sings are the true voice of the young people demanding a change in the reality of Tunisia, where freedom is scant and restricted. A movie about a rarely known country to Koreans, Tunisians’ craving for freedom as mirrored in this musical film touches our hearts through enchanting melodies of Arab songs. This debut work needs our notice in the context of ′Arab Spring′ movies. (RHEE Soue-won)
